With Portugal being a sport’s world force in many ways, the Portuguese companies are increasingly present in the development of technical and high performance equipment. That’s what will be demonstrated by the business group that prepares to attend the ISPO Munich, the largest sporting goods fair in the world, whose next edition will be held from February 3rd to 6th at Messe München, in the capital of Bavaria.

The fair will be attended by a large group of Portuguese companies, largely supported by the "From Portugal" internationalization project: 4Teams, A. Fiuza & Irmão, A. Sampaio & Filhos, Bergand By Gulbena, Clothius, Dune Bleue, Faria da Costa, Fiorima, FLM Têxtil, Helio Têxtil, Idepa, J. Caetano & Filhas, Lipaco, LMA, NGS Malhas, Oldtrading, Olmac, Onda, P&R Têxteis, Ropar, Sidónios, SIT, Smart Inovation, Tapa Costuras, Têxtil António Falcão and WAT are the names that make up the entourage put together by Associação Selectiva Moda, in a fair where Portugal will also be represented by Carvema, Fradelsport, Impetus, Têxtil Sancar and by the research centres CITEVE and CeNTI.

CITEVE, the sector’s technological centre, is a long-standing partner of the Portuguese participation in ISPO. "We challenged the companies to participate in this fair. We did some reconnaissance work and realized that this was the right bet for companies which manufacture technical applications for sports," recalls Braz Costa, the centre’s General Director. It’s also his conviction that "the growing Portuguese participation in this fair is the mirror of the specialization that is taking place in the textile and clothing sector in Portugal, and at the same time it’s an opportunity to keep these companies in contact with the best in the world."

In Munich, the Portuguese delegation will seek to stand out for its commitment to innovative and sustainable products. A strategy that is reaping fruit even before the fair start, with the Portuguese delegation being awarded 22 prizes at ISPO Textrends, a competition organized by the fair itself.

With more than 500 articles in competition, the fair’s jury was sensitive to the quality of Portuguese articles and awarded several of the companies present. A.Sampaio & Filhos is the most represented, with eleven articles awarded (two in the "Top 10" category), followed by LMA, with five awards (one "Top 10"), Bergand By Gulbena, with four distinctions (one "Top 10"), NGS Malhas, with an award-winning sample, and Tintex Textiles, with an article selected for the" Best Product" category.

"It’s the largest technical textile fair where producers and brands are more open than ever to innovative and differentiating solutions," explains Mário Brito, CCO of Smart Inovation, about the importance of ISPO Munich. At the fair, the company based in Barcelos will present its novelties in functional finishes for clothing, which antibacterial, antifungal and anti-mosquitoes protection.

At the fair, more than 80 thousand visitors are expected and Portugal will be side by side with the market’s most advanced industries. "This is the world's largest sporting trade fair. It brings together more than 2,700 exhibitors, specialists in segments such as winter sports, outdoor, health and fitness, and that are focused on value added products such as technical textiles, digitization and sustainability," says Paulo Rodrigues, Fiorima’s industrial director, a company specialized in producing the new generation of socks.

In Munich, Portugal will have the "Sport Textile Village From Portugal", a privileged space where many of the main Portuguese innovations will be presented, with a selection of products ranging from the yarn industry to clothing production, finishes and accessories.

"We will present a wide range of products for the production of sports articles, such as reflective yarn or thread with functional finishes," says Jorge Pereira, Lipaco’s CEO, one of the Portuguese representatives in the yarn section.

At the fair, the Portuguese companies’ are betting on Seamless technology, used to manufacture seamless clothing and increasingly used in the sports world. An example is SIT, a company specialized in this area of expertise. "At ISPO we will present technical and performance products for Activewear, Athleisure, Underwear, Shapewear, Fitness, Yogawear, Skiwear and Cycling," said Teresa Borges, the company’s commercial director.

Clothius is also focused on this innovative technology. "We will present seamless base layers, leggings, T-shirts, coats and other sports articles" says Jorge Vale, the company’s manager.

At the Oldtrading stand, the focus will be very similar. "We will showcase some of our most innovative products, so that people can see what Seamless technology can provide. The expectations are enormous. We hope to attract customers from northern Europe," concludes Rui Gordalina, the company’s CEO.

In the accessories department, the highlight goes to 4Teams, a textile company from Vizela that has produced more than 500,000 scarves for the last World Cup. "Our core business is Sports Merchandising, but we will also present a range of products focused on the Sports Fashion segment," said Anthony Câmara, the company's commercial and marketing director.

The Portuguese companies’ will also stand out for their environmental responsibility. "The products that we will present in this edition are based on sustainable raw materials," says Pedro Fiusa, Customer Manager at A.Fiuza & Irmão, a company specialized in socks.

With this strategy, the aim of the "From Portugal" entourage is to attract the attention of buyers from more developed markets. "The expectations could not be higher. Our main markets are Germany, England, the Nordic countries, the United States of America and Canada," explains Ricardo Almeida, WAT’s CEO, a company specialized in sportswear.

"We think it’s very likely for us to find more buyers from England, possibly from the United States and from the Scandinavian market," adds Amelia Antunes, Olmac’s Sales Director, who in Munich will present technical textiles, in a segment called "fashion meets outdoor."

"We set some expectations regarding our participation, and we are hoping to increase our network of contacts and to establish partnerships with those who visit us" summarizes Cláudia Noversa, responsible for the Communication and Marketing departments at FLM Têxtil, who expresses the feeling of all the companies present.

The Portuguese companies participation in ISPO is an initiative of Selectiva Moda and ATP - Textile and Clothing Association of Portugal, which aims to promote the internationalization of Portuguese fashion companies. The project “From Portugal” is co-financed by Portugal 2020, under Compete 2020 - Operational Program for Competitiveness and Internationalization, with an eligible support amount of €12,118,285.17, of which €6,695,352.55 comes through the European Regional Development Fund.
